HAWKING OF LICENCES
Minister Warns Importers (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 24. Any importer found “hawking” an import licence would have his licence cancelled and would not get another under a Labour Government, the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Holloway) said in the House of Representatives today. Speaking in the Imprest Supply Bill debate. Mr Holloway said there had been very few complaints from the commercial community about the operation of import control.
Mr J. K. McAlpine (Opposition. Selwyn): There are people hawking licences.
Mr Holloway: If anyone is hawking a licence it will be cancelled and he won’t get another under a Labour Government. Mr J. T. Watts (Opposition. Fendalton): It’s not illegal. Mr Holloway: It’s morally illegal. Later in the debate. Mr D. J Eyre (Opposition. North Shore) said many businessmen were afraid to “open their mouths” and say what they knew eboui licences.
“They are frightened of victimisation by the department. That’s how Hitler came to power,” Mr Eyre said. Mr E. J. Keating (Government. Hastings): Twaddle.
