Road Safety

Sir, — I have the best of .authority for stating that motorists emerging from Harper avenue and turning into Park terrace have the right of way as against those turning from Carlton Mill road into Park terrace. Both are changing direction and in such caseS the right-hand rule applies. It was therefore very annoying to receive a rude and raucous blast as I did on Sunday morning last from a car coming from Carlton Mill road and overtaking me at a fast pace, when I quite legitimately claimed the right of way when proceeding from Harper avenue into Park terrace. Pending the proposed regulation »of traffic at this intersection it might, help to prevent a nasty accident if ' the rights 0# motorists turning from Harper avgnue were mope clearly recognised. This is not’ thei- first time s..> haVe been tooted at by some'person ignorant of the application of the right-hand rule at this intersection.—Yours, etc., G. P. PURNELL June 20, 1960. [The City Council Traffic Superintendent (Mr G. P. Kellar) said: “I am very familiar with this intersection and agree that quite a number of motorists coming along Carlton Mill road to Park terrace appear to assume they have the right of way over traffic turning into Park terrace from Harper avenue. Both sets of traffic are executing a right turn at the intersection; therefore Harper avenue traffics should get right of way. Numerous Court decisions have been given along these lines.”]

Sir,—Can I ascertain the legality of driving on the wrong side of the road? I note that many milk vendors and newspaper distributors make a practice of this. I have been informed by one person that there is a special exemption for these people and that they are allowed to go from the left-hand side to the right-hand side of the road. If a special provision has been made, I think it should be rescinded, as the practice is very dangerous. I have found it disconcerting to meet a crossing vehicle. Could the Transport Department inform us on this subject? If it is illegal, then why is no action taken against the many offenders in this matter?—Yours, etc., SAFETY. June 20, 1960.

[The City Council Traffic Superintendent (Mr G. P. Kellar) said: “Neither milk vendors nor newspaper runners are exempted from compliance with the Traffic Regulations.”]
