MAORI CHIEF FAVOURED
Second Leg At ' Claudelands
“The Pnst“ Special Service AUCKLAND. June 24. The former Westport pacer. Maori Chief, is expected td follow up his win at Thames last Saturday with a win in the Electric Handicap, the second leg of the double at the Waikato Trotting Club's meeting at Claudelands tomorrow. Maori Chief handled the atrocious track conditions at Thames much more confidently than any of his rivals and he won stylishly by 10 lengths. The Noble Chief six-year-old will meet stronger opposition in tomorrow's rgce, but the sprint distance should suit him and it is expected that he will again handle the heavy going better than any of the others. Linda Stirling was successful on the Cambridge course a fortnight ago when she won by four ana a half lengths. The going will be much heavier at Claudelands, but the Morano mare should still give a good account of herself. Sannock tailed over two miles at Thames after breaking at the start. He has shown useful form in winter conditions and looks ready to race prominently. Weekender. which will be bracketed with Agreement, Scot's Guide, Melrose Girl and Yarkl are others expected to add interest to the finish.
The three-year-old. Hautapu. is expected to gain his first win for the season in the first leg, the Wilfred Johnstone Memorial Handicap. Hautapu was second to Gay Wanderer in a similar race on this course on June 4 at his last start. Gay Wanderer and T. H. Gunning's bracket of Tobermory and Donna may be the hardest for him to beat.
