STOCK SALES CLASH
Tinwald Sale Discussed
It was definitely undesirable that the Addington stock market and the Tinwald stock market should be held on the same day. it was agreed by most members when the executive committee of Mid-Ctmterbury Federated Farmers met yesterday. However, a few members felt that the clash would not make a great deal of difference.
The president (Mr D. M. Bruce) said that the directors of the Canterbury Saleyards Company had decided to hold the Addington sale on a Tuesday for about five months during the winter until it reverted to a two-day sale. Stock and station agents wanted an opinion from farmers whether the Tinwald market should remain a Tuesday fixture or be held on a Monday North Canterbury Federated Farmers had agreed to the change at Addington from a Wednesday to a Tuesday because butchers had found it difficult to get meat into their shops in time for the week-end trade. The change did not affect North Canterbury, but Mid-Canterbury was in a different position. A considerable number of store sheep would be sold at Tinwald at the same time as at Addington. and this would be detrimental The alternative appeared to be to hold the Tinwald market on a Monday, but there was little doubt that agents and farmers would have some Sunday work forced on them.
Some suggestions bad been made that the Tinwald market be held on a Wednesday, but it was thought that the butchers in Ashburton might have the same objection as those in Christchurch.
Mr E. J. Croy asked whether there was a definite move to alter the day of the Tinwald market. “We should let it run along on a Tuesday and see what happens. We should not make any move until we know what the repercussions will be,” he said. No change was going to be made in the sale day of the Tinwald stock market until the end of July, replied Mr Bruce. “Whatever happens, we want to see that the stock numbers do not fall. If stock, especially store sheep, falls, it will mean that the market will not get the fees to improve the yard.”
