£42,528 From Meters

The silver coins which keep Christchurch’s 1210 parking meters ticking produced £42.528 for the City Council last year, and this year are estimated to bring in another £42,000. The receipts exceeded last year’s estimate, which was £39,000.

The council’s separate parking meter account approved with the other estimates last evening also estimated £3OOO in cash takings from the recently-opened Tuam street parking lot, the land for which was purchased from meter receipts.

Set against the meter receipts this year is an estimated expenditure of £9852, which includes salaries for a collector and two patrols, a replacement research and £2lOO for maintenance. From the account, the council has met the cost of several sets of traffic control lights—Durham. Kilmore and Victoria streets at £2961: High. Madras and St. Asaph streets at £2444: and Manchester. Armagh street and Oxford terrace at £3799 were financed last year. This year there is provision for another £l4OO to be spent on the lights at Linwood avenue. £2500 for the realignment of Park terrace, and £4OOO for the Carlton Bridge traffic control lights. The year began with a carryforward of £13.756. This year, the estimates provide for a carry-for-ward of £26,029.

Fire in Couch.— Two units from the Central Fire Station attended a fire in a couch in the kitchen of 387 Cashel street at 5.21 yesterday The occupant of the dwelling is Betty Rhona Woodhouse The fire .was extinguished without trouble and only minor damage was done.
