REDCLIFFS RANGE DEVELOPMENT

Carnival Planned To Raise Funds

A two-day carnival to. raise funds for the development of the old Redcliffs rifle range as a play area and community centre, will be held at Labour week-end. Tentative bookings for many trade displays, side-shows and children’s entertainments have already been made for the carnival, which will run on the Saturday and Monday. Twenty local organisations—sports clubs, church guilds and parent-teacher associations —have offered to run stalls and assist with organisation. A large diagram, illustrating the mammoth organisation of the fair, was inspected by interested residents of Redcliffs on Wednesday evening. Plans for displays by more than 16 firms and more than 20 side-shows are shown. Development of the 120-acre range which the Army has handed over to the Christchurch City Council, will be a combined project of the Redcliffs Residents’ Association and the council. Trees will be planted on the hills around the range by pupils of the Redcliffs School on Arbor Day. The levelling of a portion of the land at the front of the range will be carried out by the council next year. The secretary of the development committee (Mr A. Dryburgh) said that although the levelling was estimated to cost about £4500, it would be no burden on the ratepayers. The money would be provided out of the counc'l’s reserve development fund. A subsidy of 10s in the £ will be paid by the council on all money raised by the committee, said Mr Dryburgh. The development plan envisaged by the committee provides for playing fields for all sports, a children’s play centre, a car parking area, and a community centre to be built at a later date.
