SUMNER GAS SUPPLY

Negotiations For

Transfer

Approval in principle to a proposal of the New Zealand Gas Council to continue the gas supply to 300 Sumner consumers was given by the City Council last evening, when it authorised its works committee to negotiate an agreement. Cr. A. R. Guthrey, chairman of the committee, said the council had served notice that it was closing the Sumner gasworks at the end of this year. Previously it had made efforts to dispose of the works and the supply to anyone interested, but no-one was. It was impossible for the council to maintain them economically. Now the gas council had a scheme for the Lyttelton Borough Council, which had a modern gasworks and a good potential, to supply Sumner with gas. The proposal involved the probable lease of the Sumner area owned by the council. The city would not suffer by any agreement, Cr. Guthrey said, and he was glad that a solution to the problem now seemed possible.
