DISABLED YOUTHS TRAINED

Sheltered Workshop

Association

The Canterbury Sheltered Workshop Association’s centre in Christchurch now trains 20 young people iq woodwork, needlework, spinning and weaving of woollen articles, says the annual report presented yesterday by the president (Mr E. R. Clarke). “The roll of trainees has increased from 10 to 20 since last year although seven trainees have left. Two of these are now in permanent jobs, two have gone to special schools under the Child Welfare Division, two are working at home, and one girl is making good progress in typewriting classes at a commercial college,” says the report. Sales of goods made in the workshop, realised a profit of £165 17s. "In spite of cramped quarters, and although new ones are continually deferred, when we continually deferred, the year’s work has been satisfactory. By their regular attendance in all weathers and their ready co-operation, the 20 trainees show appreciation of what we are trying to do for them. They show it even more, though unconsciously, by the improvement in their skill, in their attitude to work, concentration, perseverance, initiative and maturity of behaviour both at the workshop and at home,” says the report. The following officers were elected:—

Patron, the Mayor (Mr G. Manning): president, Mr E. R. Clarke; vice-presidents, Messrs M. A. Connelly, M.P., H. O’Reilly, C. Cain, M. Cosgriff, M. Ott, and Dr. W. M. Platts; executive, Messrs D. W. Lyall, A. B. Allen, E. Nettleton, D. Barrett, R. Sarjeant, and Mrs C. Gainsford; treasurer, Mrs J. Wood; secretary, Miss C. E. Robinson; auditor, Mr J. Cuddon.
