MORE INTEREST IN ASTRONOMY

“Compulsory Subject In Year Or Two”

(New Zealand Press Association) WHAKATANE. June 20.

Astronomy will be a compulsory school subject in New Zealand within the next year or two, in the opinion of Mr L. R. H. Beaumont, of the Auckland adult education council, who predicted that soon a chair in astronomy would be established at a New Zealand university. Holder of the Murray Geddes memorial prize, in astronomy, Mr Beaumont delivered a lecture at a Community Arts Service sponsored week-end school in astronomy at Whakatane. In an interview he said that the large attendance at the school was further evidence of the tremendous interest now being taken throughout the world in astronomy. Until now there had been no real opening in New Zealand for those who wanted to make a career in astronomy, but interest was being awakened.

Even the armed forces were realising the value of astronomy, he said. Airmen used the Auckland planetarium for faster training. People were keen today to learn and were intrigued by the mystery of the universe.
