KAURI IN SOUTH ISLAND

Trial Planting Of Seedlings

“The Press" Special Service

AUCKLAND, June 20,

A thousand kauri seedlings wil) be sent from the Waipoua State kauri forest nursery to the South Island for trial planting this year. Stating this in an address to the Tree Society. Mr M. J. Conway, of the Forest Service at Auckland, said the climate for the kauri was not limited to its present natural range from North Cape to a line between Tauranga and Kawhia. The tree had been grown in Nelson, Westland, Otago and on Stewart Island, he said, and fossilised resin and pollen grains in South Island coal beds were evidence that the kauri once grew naturally there. The Forest Service had planted about 500 acres in various localities. There was no doubt that the kauri could be grown successfully provided care was taken and the site was good.

Mr Conway said he would like to see tree societies and local bodies promote the planting of kauris in all provinces.
