June M New provisions for the safety of vessels have been agreed by the M-nation conference on the safety of life at sea, which held its final session in London today. The month-long conference has revised and amended the oonvention for the safety of life at sea, drawn up in 1948. It has adopted 56 recommendations on subjects directly connected with maritime safety, in addition to those concerning nuclear ships, which form a new chapter in the convention. The new regulations stipulate that all nuclear vessels, except warships, shouM be covered by the convention. Approval for reactor installation in ships, provision of an operating manual, questions of radiation safety and other precautions are ail made the responsibility of the government concerned. Exotie Timbers.— The Canterbury Master Builders’ and Joiners’ Association has given its full support to the contention of the Canterbury Education Board that more exotic timbers should be used to conserve native timbers.
