HOCKEY Complaint At Response To Calls For Collectors

Having made repeated calls for hockey players to come forward and assist iq the house-to-house collection for Olympic funds on July 2, the management committee of the Canterbury Hockey Association is extremely disappointed at the poor response. At a meeting of the management committee last evening, the president (Mr A. McCrorie) warned hockey players that unless further collectors were found there was a strong possibility that the fourteenth member of the Olympic team might not be able to travel through lack of finance. “It could well be that a Canterbury players is the fourteenth member of the team, and it would be extremely embarrassing if he could not go because we haven’t got the finance,’’ said Mr McCrorie. “I am very sorry that players haven't got behind us to the hilt, but I am still hopeful that we will have many more names of collectors by next week.’’ it seemed that many players had no confidence in the association or the team, said Mr B. Lloyd. It was a very sad reflection on the sport. A complaint at the method of selection of representative teams was received from the Reddiffs club. “It has been found by our committee that teams selected so far this season have comprised mainly players from certain clubs, six or seven players in one team,” said the letter. “We express our disapproval at this procedure and ask that selectors be compelled to see each team in their grades.” The meeting agreed it had every confidence in the selectors,

and decided to take no action on the letter. | ' ...-J Hatch Cap.—A letter was received from the Canterbury Junior Hockey Association advising that a team would compete at the Hatch Cup tournament at Masterton in the August school holidays. The entry will be forwarded to the national association. Rough Play.—The Selwyn club wrote complaining at rough play in a senior match against Woojston. The umpires' representative (Mr B. Lloyd) said he wished to assure the club that umpires were doing all they could to stamp out rough play. The overall conduct of players this season had been particularly good, he said. Lower Fees Sought.— A reduction in fees was sought by the Teachers’ Training College dub. which claimed that the cost of the sport was high for students. The treasurer (Mr G. Reid) will approach the club and explain the association’s attitude. Olympic Fund.—The association will write to the New Zealand association advising that it will make final arrangements for payment of its share to the Olympic fund at its next meeting on July 4. The association must find £7OO as its share.
