Held Prisoner In
Court By Police
LONDON, June 20. A Transvaal Magistrate, Mr H. S. Bosman, has been paid £l5OO damages by the South African Department of Justice for being held a captive in his own Court.
Details of the courtroom incident were disclosed today, the “Daily Express” reported. A policeman, a witness in a theft case, persistently refused to answer Mr Bosman when he was asked a question about fingerprints. Mr Bosman ordered him to be kept in custody for 24 hours for refusing to answer questions after taking the oath as a witness. A second policeman was ordered to arrest the first but refused to obey the order. Mr Bosman then adjourned the Court and retired to his. office. Outside. several policemen gathered to stop him from leaving. The Magistrate clambered through a window. He got only as far as the street when he was caught by a policeman. He was forcibly pushed back to his office and put under house arrest. Word reached the District Police Commandant. He dashed to the Court and freed the Magistrate.
