Building For Transmitter

The New Zealand Broadcasting Service wanted to build a tern-' Porary television transmitter building in the 3YA yard in Gloucester street, said Mr J. H. E. Schroder, the Director of Broadcasting, yesterday, commenting on the refusal of the city council to allow a temporary building in materials which did not comply with the city by-laws Mr Schroder said the proposed temporary building would be quite- small and not form any part of a future television station While the application for the use of the proposed materials had been declined. Mr Schroder said the Broadcasting Service had been informed that an alternative design involving the use of hollow bricks would be permitted, although the use of the bricks was a concession. He added that the alternative and the conditions were acceptable to the Broadcasting Service. Cr. W. P Glue, chairman of the council’s town planning committee, said yesterday that the council had no auarrel with the establishment of a television station, or with an experimental station, but when it looked at the other “temooraryf buildings erected by the Government around the citv and saw that some were now nearly 20 years old it could not agree to another temporary building

Cr. Glue said the application was rejected bv the council. Any other reference to possible alternative material? might have been made by a council officer, but had not been considered by the council
