OIL REFINERY TESTS
Notices Mailed To Farmers
(New Zealand Prftss Association) AUCKLAND, June 19. Nine landowners in the Matingarahi district on the west side of i the Firth of Thames, the probable site of the £2O million oil refinery and satellite town, have received notices that the Government intends to carry out investigations on their properties. The notices, .put in the mail by the Auckland office of the Ministry of Works late on Friday afternoon, inform the owners of the properties that the Government has decided that investigations should be made into the suitability of their land for an oil refinery and that the Minister of Works (Mr Watt) has directed that the investigations be put in hand. The investigations will also encompass a site for the new town.
The notices quote section 30 of the Finance Act, 1945, which gives the Government, power to undertake any work for any purpose which it considers is good, and also empowers it to dispose of any land it takes for this purpose either by sale or lease.
