CHRIST’S COLLEGE WINS

St. Andrew’s College Beaten, 13-9

An industrious pack that concentrated on raking the ball to welldrilled backs gave Christ’s College its fifth successive win over St. Andrew’s College by 13 points to 9 in the annual match at Christ’s College on Saturday. It was a triumph for the Christ’s College pack, which, outweighed by an average of half a stone, won a near monopoly of the ball from set play and bustled the St. Andrew’s backs into errors in the open. The teams were: Christ’s College.—D. L. Hazlett; W. N. Scales, P. R. Black, R. M. Edmond; J. L. Armstrong (captain), J. K. Praln; E. T, Ormond; J. G. Neilson; N. A. Lester, J. St. J. Parson, R. W. House, J. S. Baird; J. R. Greenslade, H. J. Nlmmo, A. A. Henderson.

St. » A 2, dr Sy r ’ s College.—J. A. Mills; B. R. Mawson, W. J. Thompson (captain), D. J. Hayes; D. A. Stone, i; »• «• Judson; w«, T J Wy U Ie L D - G - s Pence. H. B. Millard, R. H. S. Jones, G. B. Robertson; J. W. Ullrich, D. V. Maginness, A. R. Turner. The Christ’s College backs handled well and varied their play intelligently when they ran into the steady St. Andrew's defence. Ormond and Prain showed the clear understanding that comes from long practice, and with the ball reaching him swiftly from the base of the scrum, Prain had time to vary his attack. A beautifully-placed kick behind the opposing centre brought one try, and a second came when he brought the full-back into the attack. Armstrong, and Black, at centre, had few opportunities in orthodox play, but Scales, on the left wing, made use of all his opportunities.

The St. Andrew's centre, Thompson, however, was the most impressive back on the field. He tackled stoutly, and extended the defence every time he received <he ball; but handling lapses by the inside backs deprived Mm of the chance to show his full ability. At full-back. Mills was like a rock. Baird led the Christ's College pack ably, with Neilson showing up in loose play and Ninuno hooking very well. Jones, Robertson and Millard were the pick of the St. Andrew's pack.

Christ's College opened the scoring when Armstrong gathered in a rolling ball kicked by Prain and dived over. Ormond converted. Hazlett joined the backs and after finding a gap, handed on to Black, who scored. St. Andrew’s replied with a fine passing rush in which Mills and Hayes featured. When the movement was checked, Judson swung play to the other wing and Mawson scored a good try. In the second spell, Judson kicked a good penalty goal, but Christ’s College went further into the lead when Baird charged down a clearing kick by Mawson and scored a well-deserved try that Ormond converted. St. Andrew’s brought the score to 13-9 when Allan broke through a gap and handed on to Mills, who scored in the corner. At this stage, St. Andrew’s was playing with a verve that had been lacking, but the Christ's College defence met all the demands made on it and the score was unchanged at the end. The referee was Mr L. S. Kirk.
