SOUTH CANTERBURY COMPETITION

Star Surprises By Beating Celtic

"7 (From pur Own Reporter; TIMARU, V June 19. A 35-yard penalty by ths full-back, C. Gosney, in the. final minute of the game, gave Star A win against Celtic at Fraser Park on Saturday. Star won. 14-12, in the major surprise of the 1960 South Canterbury senior Rugby competition. On Saturday Zlngari also caused a minor upset by beating Temuka, 11-9, and Skinner Cup points are now as follows:

Waimate 16, Temuka 12. Zlngari 12, Celtic 10, Old Boys 8, Geraldine 8, Mackenzie 4, Star 2. Hard-pressed to ward off determined attacks by the Celtic backs in the ' first half. Star forwards fought on much more determinedly than usual in the second half, and the team had a well deserved success—its first win for the season. Gosney and the first five-eighths, D. Roddick, were two of the outstanding backs for Star. Gosney came under heavy pressure in the first spell, but he never flinched in taking high kicks in front of the Celtic forwards, and he usually cleared Star with some fine raking touch-finders. Gosney’s grand tackling often stopped Celtic when the defence seemed to be well beaten. The enterprising Roddick found some gaps in the Celtic inside defence, and he and the second fiveeighths, R. Cowan, both took a lot of stopping with tneir powerful running. The front-ranker, A. Ferguson, and the two loose forwards, P. Matsis and R. Garvin, were outstanding in a Star pack which was much more lively than Celtic in the open. Celtic’s backs, well served by J. O’Donnell, combined in several crisp passing movements early in the game, but the stubborn defence kept the Star line intact until the second half.

For Star, Garvin scored a try Which Gosney converted, and Gosney kicked three penalties. Celtics points were from tries by O’Donnell and M. Keegan, and two penalties by P. Hogan. Zlngari prevailed by 11 points to 9 against Temuka in a slogging forward game at Fraser Park. Zlngari led, 11 points to nil, after 30 minutes, and 11-3 at half-time, but Temuka staged a determined second half challenge which could easily have brought success had M. Sullivan been in kicking form. Sullivan, usually accurate from the shorter distances, missed a 30-yard penalty in the final minute of the game. T. D. Coughlan played an outstanding game In the Temuka pack until he had to retire with a head injury in the second half, and J. Senior was a good leader of the Zingari pack. For Zingari, G. McLaughlin scored a try which C. Rogers converted, and Rogers kicked two penalties. For Temuka, R. Ellen scored a try and Sullivan kicked two penalties.
