STIRLING MOSS INJURED
Legs Broken In Trials Crash
FRANCORCHAMP (Belgium),, June 18 The British racing driver, Stirling Moss, was rushed to hospital today after his car, a Lotus, overturned at the trials for tomorrow’s Belgian grand prix. Both his legs were broken below the knee.
Later, Mike Taylor, another British driver, was seriously burned when his Lotus overturned and caught fire. Moss’s accident occurred as he went into the Burno Ville curb, about four miles from the grandstand. The Belgian driver, Gendebien, gave first news of the crash when he pulled up near the pits. He said that Moss’s car left the road on the left hand side, and capsized in the ditch. Moss, he said, was lying on the road.
Moss, who is 30. has had many narrow escapes and several injuries in his racing career, which has lasted a decade, but he has always resisted attempts to persuade him to retire while he was on top.
When his colleague, Peter Collins, was killed, he was deeply affected and said: “When you lose a friend in a train you don’t feel you want to take a train again.” But he added: “Racing is in my blood. It is me. I shall go on.”
