Chatham Islands
Sir, —Now that it is open season for politicians’ promises it would be interesting to hear what plans each party has for the future development of Chatham Islands. Messrs Shand, Lake, Kirk, Watt. Skinner, Tirikatene, and Mathison have all seen at first hand the problems of stock disposal and passenger transport; now it remains to be seen whether any politician has the courage of his convictions or whether it is a fact that no matter which party is in power, bureaucrats still rule the country. Having just paid £2OOO freight for cattle and woo! shipped from the island and now faced with the prospect of killing and dumping 500 sheep for the second year in succession (with complete apathy from the N.Z. Federated Farmers and the N.Z. Meat Producers’ Board) a little bitterness is perhaps understandable.—Yours, etc., H. W. MARSHALL. June 11, 1960.
