Shooting Accidents
Sir, —At last it seems, some organisation is doing something practical to reduce casualties in the shooting field. The North Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Deerstalkers' Association deserves a very good mark for instituting a system of instruction in the handling of arms and bush safety. It has always appeared anomalous, considering the trouble taken over the instruction of embryo motorists, that nothing of the kind has been done in the case of those armed with lethal weapons; and if motorists are under an obligation to possess and study the Road Code, why should not those who acquire firearms be under a similar obligation? It would involve relatively little • trouble and expense to produce a brief compendium of the elementary safety rules for distribution to those who acquire firearms: and who knows how many lives might be saved thereby?—l am, etc..
