Fish Prices
Sir, —The president of the Christchurch Fish Retailers’ Association, Mr H. Yates, veers with the wind to refer to what many consumers remember as “Black Friday” when the selling values of several food commodities were adjusted by retailers. Before that memorable day the association had resisted price control, and in reply to my letter of inquiry the then president. Mr Sim, said that I was thirsting for information. On this late date one is now grateful to Mr Yates for the information that we are now waiting for a price order to be fixed by the Government. One therefore hopes that the anticipated order will protect the fisherman and the consumer from exploitation by the middleman, and allow the fisherman to land his catch at any port.—Yours, etc., RIP VAN WINKLE. June 15, 1960.
