Beer Consumption
Sir, —It is interesting to read that New Zealand is third in the world for per capita consumption of beer. So many of the patrons of the pubs claim they only go for “a couple” and the companionship, that one wonders who consumes all this alcohol. Evidently that couple means a couple of half-gallons or so. What is a moderate drinker, anyway? I am a teetotaller and they tell me I am a wowser. I have a couple of drinks with them, and I am told that I am a hypocrite This, of course, leaves me no choice but to return to being a wowser.—Yours, etc., D. C. McKIE. Bcnmore, June 14, 1960.
