Persistence Needed “Write another letter to the library committee and if nothin? happens, 'phone me once a month until something does,” said Cr. T. D. Flint at the annual meeting of the Woolston Public Library last evening. He was referring to comments that the committee had written letters over the last three years to have the porch renovated but nothing had been done. Mr Walsh Congratulated The Canterbury District Council of the Federation of Labour last night congratulated the president of the federation (Mr F. P. Walsh) and the national executive on their conduct of the freezing workers’ dispute and “their ability to call off the ban on the loading out of meat while still maintaining the principles involved.” Missing ( Youth Found Warwick Ramsay Benjes, aged 19, who was reported missing from his home at West belt, Rangiora, on June 8. is now returning to Christchurch from Auckland, where he has been staying for the last few days. In response to a newspaper advertisement, Mr Benjes reported to the Auckland police on Wednesday. School Sports The Christchurch City Council’s reserves committee intends to call a more widely-representative meeting of schools and sports bodies to discuss payment for the use of grounds as a contribution toward their maintenance. At a recent meeting with representatives of the Christchurch Postprimary Schools’ Council it was agreed that the City Council should not delegate authority to other organisations to “sub-let” grounds.

Museum Classes With the increasing number of displays available for teaching and the availability of the planetarium theatre in addition to the main lecture theatre, school classes at the Canterbury Museum may be increased. Application is being made for a third education officer. From May 7 to June 15 formal classes were given to 2136 children and the total attending in organised groups was 2373 Already 70 applications have been received for planetarium lessons. Circular Marathon Whenever the Education Department or allied national organisations send out a general circular. Mr P J Halligan (secretary of the Post-primary Schools’ Council and of all of the high school boards in Christchurch) has to read them at about a dozen meetings. This month is probably the worst in his experience. He has had from the Education Department very long and involved circulars on insurance of special assets, third-party insurance for teachers’ cars, and the custody of school funds; from the Education Commission on the dates of its hearings and closing dates for special-topic submissions; and from the Secondary School Boards’ Association reams on the position of Mr O. Conibear and related matters. Fish More Plentiful Larger quantities of fish were on sale In the Christchurch fish markets yesterday. Gurnard, groper and tarakihi were the most plentiful, with red cod and sole also available. Prices were unchanged from the previous day, when supplies were short, because of the strong demand. Supplies are expected to be even better today. Umbrellas In Bed

Condensation in the Ellerslie pensioner flats had been so bad that the elderly people living in them had often been forced to hold umbrellas over their heads while they were in bed, the Mayor of Ellerslie (Mr L. Elsmore) told a borough council meeting. Roofing insulation in the flats, built two years and a half ago, had been incorrectly laid, he said. Two years ago. minor roof repairs had been done, but this had still not completely rectified the position. The council’s executive committee, asked to take immediate action, has arranged for another builder to remove and lay the roofs again next Monday.—(P.A.)
