M otor-Cycling HARTLE WINS 350 c.c. RACE
Trophy Event In Isle Of Man (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) DOUGLAS (Isle of Man), June 15. The Englishman, John Hartle, riding an Italian M.V. Augusta, won the 350 c.c. Junior International Tourist Trophy motor-cycle race today in record time. In a thrilling race with the world champion John Surtees (M.V.), he covered the six laps of the mountain course, totalling 226 miles, in 2hr 20min 28.8 sec at an average speed of 96 70 miles an hour. Surtees started tn fast style when he broke the lap record twice in the first two laps, finally pushing it up to 98 74 miles an hour with a time of 45min 51 Bsec. But he broke his gearbox in the third lap and for the rest of the race had to ride without his third gear. On the last lap he was falling further and further behind Hartle. The riders who retired were Tom Phillips (Norton, Sydney). Trevor Pound (Norton, Victoria), and Ron Miles (Norton, Melbourne) all in the first lap; Peter Pawson (AJ.S., New Zealand) at the end of the third lap. and Hugh Anderson (Norton. New Zealand) in the fourth lap. Surtees now leads the world championship table with 10 points, 6 for today’s second place and 4 for his French Grand Prix third place.
