EROSION IN ESTUARY

Tidal Waves’ Damage

The low tide channel in the Estuary alongside the main road between Wakatu avenue and the yacht club building was moving in towards the road, and indications showed that protective filling would be required there within the next two months, the works committee reported to the City Council.

Previously the council made rock from the McCormacks Bayquarry available to residents with properties backing on to the seafront at Redcliffs. the conymittee continued. The rock was deposited as close as possible to the site. Some further deterioration had taken place on the sea front in the area, and the deterioration was expedited by the recent tidal wave action. It was proposed to continue the service to residents. The unusual conditions and previous storms had caused considerable damage to the drum groynes at the end of the South Brighton spit, the committee said They were being rebuilt.

An amount of £lOOO had been provided on the draft estimates for sea protection work in the area.
