RICCARTON WANTS CONFERENCE

Secondary Schools’ Association The New Zealand SecondarySchool Boards’ Association executive has recommended that no conference be held this year because members have the opportunity to air their views in evidence to the Education Commission and because the Education Department is reluctant to give any long-term rulings pending the commission's findings. But the Riccarton High School Board of Governors will recommend that a conference be held in August. The chairman (Professor H. R. Gray) said that for one thing the sorry state of the constitution which caused such difficulty over the position of Mr O. Conibear needed clearing up. “Also, it is a fact that there arc long gaps between meetings of the executive and there is a danger of the association losing its grip on its own affairs." Professor Gray said. He added that this did not imply criticism of Mr Conibear's personal management of the association as president; but if the association was worth while it was worth while that members should keep more closely in touch. The board agreed unanimously that a conference should be held.
