Representatives For Districts

To maintain a constant interest in the council’s works in hand and required in each of the city’s districts, the City Council appointed councillors as district representatives. The appointments of members of the works committee were: central and Sydenham, Cr. A. R. Guthrey (the chairman); St. Albans, Crs G. D. Hattaway and M. R. Carter; Linwood. Cr. W, E. Olds; New Brighton and Woolston, Crs J. R. Smith and P. J. Skellerup; Sumner, Cr. T. D. Flint; Spreydon. Cr. A. S. Hollander.

Sumner Gasworks.— The gasworks would close on December 31 this year, the council agreed last evening. It was decided to give this notice to the remaining Sumner gas consumers and to advise the New Zealand Gas Council of the notice. Road Reconstruction.—A tender of £10.319 by Ryan Brothers was accepted by the council for reconstruction of Bowhill road. The completion time was given as two months.

Riverbank Renovation.— Some of the riverbanks in the city were being renovated, the reserves committee reported. The water’s edge on the Cambridge terrace side between Hereford street and Worcester street was badly undermined and dangerous. Almost 100 feet had to be reconstructed with rock and stone, the surface resoiled and sown in grass.

Dangerous Tree.— A large weeping willow near the Bridge of Remembrance is badly decayed and dangerous. The reserves committee reported that it would be removed and a replacement made. Theatre Repairs.— Good progress was being made with renovations to the Civic Theatre and restoration of fire damage, the entertainments committee reported. The tenders let were to D. G. Malcolm, £3774 for restoration of fire damage to the stage and basement areas; and to Alfred Brown and Company, Ltd., £998 for repainting of the auditorium.

Demolition Orders.— Housing demolition orders dealt with by the council in committee affected a total area of 3 roods 5.8 perches. Drainage Loan Supported.— Support for the Christchurch Drainage Board’s land drainage loan of £225,000 was given by the council. The board’s application is now before the Local Authorities Loans Board. In a letter asking for support of the application, the board told the council that only a small fraction of the necessary land and stormwater drainage work required could be financed out of revenue. At least half the amount of the loan would be spent in the city area, said Cr. G. A. G. Connal, who is chairman of the board. Wark at Sub-station.— Most of the concrete for the first floor of the Armagh street main substation had been poured and the contractor was placing the pipes for control cables in position before finishing off the floor, the general manager of the M.E.D. 'Mr G. H. Battersby) reported. One lift of concrete had been poured for the first-floor walls, and the boxing was being located for the second lift. New Streets.— Street names for two new subdivisions approved by the council were:—Block in Avonside drive and Wainoni road: Emlyn place, off north side of Avonside drive; Newport street, from Wainoni road westward to Emlyn place; Tenby place, off Newport street in a north-easterly direction. Marshland road and Lake Terrace road subdivision: Joy street, extension of existing Joy street to Lake Terrace road; Trina place, off east side of Joy street: Vardon crescent, off west side of Joy street; Cotton street, off east side of Marshland road to Vardon crescent; Troon place, off e ast side of Vardon crescent; Adrian place, off Vardon crescent to the south-west.
