RABBIT CONTROL BY COUNCILS
Suggestion Strongly Opposed
A proposal by the Paparua County that the Counties’' Association make representations to the Government for control of rabbits to be made a responsibility of county councils in lieu of rabbit boards was heavily defeated at yesterday’s conference of the Counties’ Association. No doubt a good job had been done by the rabbit boards but Paparua contended that just as good a job could have been done under county administration, said Mr J. H. Weaver, moving the remit. Mr A. G. Sprott MTauranga) said counties were not natural boundaries of rabbit boards. The complete extermination of the rabbit was the only aim of the boards, which were enthusiastic workers. He doubted whether borough councils would agree to county councils going into their area to do the work.
It would be a great mistake to change at this stage, said Mr A. J. Davey (Geraldine). The rabbit boards were doing a good job. If counties were asked to take over the destruction of rabbits, it would be consistent that county councils should be asked to deal with the destruction of wallabies, opossums and other pests.
