MINISTER TOLD TO RESIGN
Closure Of Private Mines
A call to the Minister of Mines (Mr Hackett) to step down and hand back the control of coal mines to men with the ability to administer them was made by Mr G. J. Williams (Inangahua) at yesterday’s conference of the Counties’ Association.
Mr Williams said private mines were being closed and he claimed to be the only county chairman able to employ fit men who were now unemployed. He was speaking to the following remit, which was adopted: “That the Government be asked to provide some relief for the loss in revenue to local bodies resulting from the action of the State Mines Department in taking over large coal-mining reserves which are then non-rateable but which, if developed privately, would be liable for rates.”
