Argentine Revolt Crushed
(N.Z. Press Association —Copj/right) BUENOS AIRES, June 13. The Argentine Government crushed a vest-pocket revolt without firing a shot today in the western city of San Luis, 500 miles west of Buenos Aires, according to United Press International. The bloodless attempted coup took place barely six hours before President Arturo Frondizi’s departure for Europe on a combined business and pleasure tour. Most of the 300 to 400 rebels involved in the abortive movement fled San Luis when the Army called on them to surrender or fight. The rebels left for arrest by the Army the commander of the “Andes Army,” General Mauricio Gomez. Gomez was one of the two high-ranking Army men involved in the conspiracy. The other was former General Fortunato Giovannoni, who disappeared with the rest of his followers.
