Lawn Tennis SURPRISE AT BECKENHAM

J. Cranston, unranked - in America, brought off a shock defeat by beating the Australian champion, R. Laver, in the third round in the men’s singles of the Beckenham (Kent) lawn tennis championships today. Cranston, a heavily built 23-year-old United States Marine sent to England under a physical fitness scheme, beat Laver. 6-2, 2-6, 8-6, in a match interrupted by rain and completed during a heavy shower. N. Fraser, joint favourite for the Wimbledon men's title, had a long, third-round match with a fellow Australian, M. Mulligan, before winning, 6-1, 7-9, 6-2. The Australian, R. Hewitt, was beaten in the third round by L. Gerrard (New Zealand), 6-4, 6-3, but R. Emerson beat Torben Ulrich (Denmark), 9-7, 8-4. Miss R. Bentley (England) ended the Russian assault.on the championship when she beat the last Soviet survivor, Miss Anna Dmitrieva, 6-0. 6-3, in the second round. x
In the same round Miss R. Morrison (New Zealand) beat Miss M. Hawton (Australia) 6-0, 6-0. and Miss M. Gerson (South Africa) beat Miss J. Lehane (Australia), who retired.
