International Relief
Sir,—l think it is wonderful the spirit of co-operation shown by New Zealand and other nations who have sprung to the assistance of distressed peoples in Japan, Chile, and Morocco. It is, however, very distressing when uninformed people suggest that the Soviet citizens are not co-operat-ing. The walls of Jericho collapsed because they were jerry-built. The houses in Morocco. Chile, and Japan collapsed because they are faulty m design and construction. Under communism, they build houses to withstand recurring earthquakes. When shakes come along the crockery may break but the houses stand firm. If peoples allow themselves to be classed as backward and “enjoy” feudal governments which force them to live in mud adobes, serious recurring fatalities must be expected. The Napier shake revealed more danger and deaths from jerry-building than earth tremors.—Yours, etc., RALPH S. WHEELER. Timaru. June 1, 1960.
