NASSELLA WORK REVIEWED

Chairman’s Report To Board

The second year of the North Canterbury Nassella Tussock Board’s development programme had been one of consolidation, the retiring chairman (Mr M. C. Hyde) said in his report to the annual general meeting at Waikari.

“Our new camp buildings at Waipara and Waiau are in operation, two houses at Culverden are completed, two houses at Cheviot are well on the way to completion, and negotiations are finished for land at Motunau,” Mr Hyde said. “We have reached a milestone in our work. Spraying for a ‘kill’ has been made on all heavy infestations outside the excluded area. It is too early yet to estimate the results, however.

“During the year we made a start on the excluded area. I think perhaps we are over-hurried in committing ourselves to this area before we are sure we have all the outside areas under control. “We must watch expenditure and keep adequate funds to deal efficiently with these outside areas. The grubbing gangs during the year left a lot to be desired. Labour was scarce and the quality was poor, and on this labour a great deal of our success depends. “Rangers also proved difficult. Good and adequate rangers are the key to our success. The board must find ways and means of keeping good men,” Mr Hyde said.
