OBJECTIONS TO ZONING

Bexley-Wainoni Land Objection to the zoning of the land at 611 Pages road, the site of a branch factory, as residential was made by Duckworth, Turner and Company, Ltd., before the town-planning appeal committee of the City Council yesterday. New Brighton was selected in 1951 as a very suitable location for decentralisation of production, said D. V. Wilson, a director of the company. The very lowlying swamp land was filled in and a modern brick factory erected, the capital value of the property now being £BOOO. The factory employed 55 skilled women, and the processing provided employment for at least another 125 persons at the main factory in Carlyle street.

“As far as we are aware, our branch factory does not create any nuisance and the work undertaken, which is clean and light, can be classified as essential,” said Mr Wilson. The substantial capital investment was made in the bellbf that security of tenure would be secured. Tattersfield, Ltd., (corner Bexley road and Brook street) made a similar objection, which was opposed by 74 residents. The manager (J. C. S. Hooke) said that the property was purchased in 1946, when the block was zoned as light industrial. About £21,000 had been spent on a new factory and the Government valuation was £10,725. The economic development of a local industry was being, and would continue to be, prejudiced and prevented by inability to extend the existing building and might well lead to the company transferring its South Island activities out of Christchurch. Objection to residential zoning, was also made by Tapper Printing Company, Ltd., (Orari street), there being 74 objections; B. B. McKenna (corner Wainoni road and Pannell avenue); Hemee Owen Williams (corner Wainoni and Breezes roads); M. L. Stringer (23 Bassett street); Joinery Service, Ltd., (205 New Brighton road), with one cross objection; H. M. Tapper (263 Locksley avenue); Hurricane Wire Netting Company (37 Birchfield avenue), four opposing; H. C. Cook (9 Mundys road), 16 nearly residents opposing; Cresswell Motors (90 Cresswell avenue) 18 nearby residents opposing. Objections to rural zoning, with requests that the properties be zoned as residential were made by Stewart G. Hampton (401 Wainoni road) and Charles H. Anderson (11 Orrick crescent). The appeal committee was Messrs W. P. Glue (chairman) and G. A. G. Connal.
