Athletics TRAINING FOR OLYMPICS
N. R. Read Goes To Australia
<N.Z. Press Association—Comiriaht) SYDNEY. April 26. New Zealand's Olympic walking champion. N. R. Read, who reached Sydney in the Monowai today, has come to Australia to train because there is no competition in New Zealand for him. In the 1956 Olympic Games, he won the 50-kilometre walk, and last month was successful in New Zealand championship events over 20 and 50 kilometres. “I have not been chosen yet. as far as I know, for the New Zealand Olympic team for Rome, but I am hoping to be.” he said today. “The team will not be announced officially until May 17 and. until then, I don’t intend to waste a moment's training.” On his four-day trip across the Tasman to Sydney, Read covered 20 miles around the Monowai's decks to keep him fit. After two weeks in Sydney, he intends to go to Melbourne for three or four months.
