WELLINGTON’S WEATHER

Public Relations Officer’s Claim

(New Zealand Press Association/ WELLINGTON, April 26.

From the point of view of flying weather, Wellington enjoys better conditions than either Whenuapai or Christchurch, and much better than many wellknown overseas airports, according to a report on Wellington’s climate tabled at a meeting of the Wellington Public Relations Advisory Committee by the city’s public relations officer (Mr J. G. Thomson)

“For flying operations, the relative freedom from fogs or very low cloud provides some compensations for the handicap of turbulence,” the report said. “Wellington airport has visibility below 2000yds or ceiling below 600 ft for only about 1.5 per cent, of the time.”

The comparative figures for Whenuapai and Christchurch were 2 per cent, and 3 per cent, respectively. Quoting Mr J. F. Gabites, of the Meteorological Service. Mr Thomson reported that “Wellington is not affected with fogs, thunderstorms, hail, snow or extremes of temperature: it has, in fact, a pleasantly mild and rather windy, but, otherwise congenial, climate.”
