RESEARCH BY UNIVERSITY
No Fellowships This Year
(New Zealana Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 26.
The University of New Zealand research fund is inadequate to meet this year’s needs. Consequently the fund committee has decided not to set aside money for research fellowships this year.
This information is contained in a letter from the chairman of the research fund committee (Mr L. J. Wild) to the council of Victoria University of Wellington tabled at a council meeting today Mr Wild said that £40,000 was originally requested from the Government, but only £25,000 was allocated as a “holding grant” for this year, pending the Parry committee’s report on New Zealand university administration. The committee recommended a grant of £65,000. which the University of New Zealand Senate subsequently endorsed. Till now, however, there had been no increase of the holding grant. The committee therefore had been forced to take drastic steps. Previously the committee had provided eight fellowships a year at a value of £450. Fellowships announced last February were met out of last year’s grant, but at present a new allocation of fellowships could not be announced unless the financial situation improved. Mr Wild also said that the committee could not give help for technical assistance at present, as had been the custom in the past.
