RUGBY TOUR DECISION
No Protest In
The Christchurch Citizens’ All Black Tour Association will not hold any protest meeting or march in protest against the New Zealand Rugby Union’s final decision to send a team without Maoris to South Africa. It will not engage in “on the field” tactics or attempt to influence any player selected for the tour; but it has not accepted the Rugby Union’s decision as being in any way right.
These points were made by Mr H. P. Smith, chairman of the association, after the committee had met yesterday. “We don’t think the decision to send a team is a right one,” he said. “In fact we think recent events have made it all the more important that a team should not go.” It had been agreed to keep the organisation alive and to watch the situation in South Africa as it affected the tour. Whether the organisation was to be converted into a permanent one to watch racial relations and be ready to act against racial intolerance or discrimination would have to be a matter for the persons who had formed the original association, Mr Smith added.
