Seamen's Union Fined £3OO MELBOURNE, April 26. The Seamen's Union was found guilty of contempt of the Commonwealth Industrial Court today and fined £3OO The Court—the Chief Judge (Mr Justice Spicer) and Mr Justice Dunphy—agreed that the union was guilty in that it had not taken any steps to prevent members from refusing to work on ships at week-ends as directed by an order on March 4
The union had pleaded not guilty to three informations alleging contempt of the order, by the Commonwealth Steamship Owners’ Association. Two informations were withdrawn. Soon after the fine was imposed. Australian seamen began a 48-hour nation-wide protest stoppage.
