KIDNAPPING OF EDITOR
Press Strike In Cyprus 'Rec. II p.m.) NICOSIA. April 25. Cypriot journalists and printers’ unions decided today to strike for 24 hours in protest against the kidnapping of the editor of the anti-Makarios newspaper “Ethniki.” The editor. Mr Andonis Pharmakides. was kidnapped early today as he arrived at his suburban home from his office. In spite of an all-out hunt by police using tracker dogs, no trace has yet been found of Mr Pharmakides. The only clue the police have is a bloodstained bedsheet and the editor’s broken spectacles, found on the veranda of his house. The Cyprus Journalists' Association hurriedly met, decided on their one-day protest strike and at the same time passed a resolution condemning “with horror and disgust’’ what they termed an attack on press freedom. The union also decided to send a delegation to Archbishop Makarios. the Greek-Cypriot Presidentelect of the projected republic of Cyprus, and other political leaders to discuss the matter.
