ADMISSION OF LAWYERS
Erasmus Wants Screening LONDON, April 26 A political “screening” of lawyers before they could be admitted to practice was advocated by the South African Minister for Justice (Mr Erasmus) yesterday, according to the “Daily Telegraph.” Mr Erasmus had told the Senate that in view of the increasing threat of communism, South Africa would have to be more selective over the admission of lawyers. People now came too easily into a position where they could act as lawyers under the protection of “officers” of the courts. Mr Erasmus said he had already taken steps to see how the admission of lawyers could be brought under stricter control than that applied by the law societies. In his opinion, the Law Society was not the best recommendation for admission. He would prefer making applicants appear before a selection board under a secretary of justice. Such a board could possibly also have the power to recommend the removal of lawyers’ names from the roll.
