Debre States French Aims

The French Premier (Mr Michel Debre) said today that France intends to restore peace in Algeria and ensure the country’s economic and political development, American Associated Press reported. He made the statement while laying the foundation stone of a new administrative building in Tizi-Ouzou, capital of the mountainous Kabylie region east of Algiers. “The real worth of the work undertaken here is that, in the same time that the work of pacification is carried to its end, we have undertaken the transformation and necessary development of Algeria,” Mr Debre said. “We thus affirm, in the economic field as in the political, administrative, and social fields, that we here are all decided . , . to see Algeria transform and develop itself.” In Tunis today, the “Algerian Provisional Government” announced decisions to step up the tempo of the insurrection against French rule in Algeria and to accept foreign volunteers to help them, Reuters reported. Some authorities thought that a time-bomb which exploded prematurely near TiziOuzou a few hours before Mr Debre’s arrival was intended to serve as a demonstration that insurgent strength had not been curbed. The explosion killed four Moslem terrorists and a fifth had his leg severed. Authorities discounted the idea that the bomb was intended for an attempt on Mr Debre’s life.
