TARAWERA RIVER POLLUTED
Fibre From Pulp Mill "The Press" Special Service ROTORUA, April 12. About half of the Tarawera river, from Kawerau to the sea, would have to be completely written off as a trout fishery, said Mr P. J. Burstall, field officer of the fisheries division of the Department of Internal Affairs. Mr Burstall said wood fibres from the Tasman Pulp and Paper Company mill at Kawerau had polluted the river, preventing water weed from growing anywhere except at the edges. Trout fishing there would be a waste of time. Mr A. Hall, a wildlife division field officer, said a retaining wall would be built at the waterfowl refuge at the river mouth at Matata to stop the fibres getting in. The Tasman company had made a financial grant toward the cost of the work.
