Special Services To Celebrate Easter

Easter—regarded by Christians as the most solemn occasion of the Christian year—will be marked by special services within Christchurch and by Easter camps away from the city, which aim at bringing the significance of Easter to the Bible class members who

attend them. Methodists will have over 700 in camps, 200 girls in Leigh camp at Loburn, 100 girls at Rangiora, 300 boys at Amberley and 100 boys at Waipara. There will be 200 boys at the Presbyterian camp at Dunsandel and 200 girls at Kaiapoi.

Baptist Bible Class Union enrolments for camps in Canterbury have increased from 400 to 460. There will be 210 in camp at Motukarara, 125 at Glenroy and 125 at Lincoln. Within the city the main Anglican services on Good Friday will be in Christchurch Cathedral, which will have three services— Matinsand Litany atB a.m.,Antecommunion at 10 a.m., and the three-hour service from 12 noon till 3 p.m. At 7.30 p.m. the Cathedral choir will sing Passion music.

The 10 a.m. service at which the Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. Martin Sullivan) will preach, will be broadcast. Holy Communion will be celebrated on Saturday at 7.30 a.m. and choral Evensong at 7.30 p.m. On Easter Day there will be Communion services at 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. and a choral Eucharist at 11 a.m. at which the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren) •will preach. The latter service will be broadcast. At 7.30 p.m. there will be a choral Evensong. Three-hour services will also be held in St. John’s Church, Latimer square, and in St. Lukes, Manchester street, at Avonside and Fendalton. The Church of St. Michael and All Angels will keep its customary watch throughout Thursday night until Good Friday. Knox Presbyterian Church will have a service at 9.45 a.m. on Good Friday and a Communion service at 11 a.m. on Easter Day. Combined Services The usual practice of a number of city churches combining to hold their Good Friday services together is again being, followed this year. Durham street Methodist Church, Oxford terrace Baptist Church, Trinity Congregational and St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church will hold a service together in Trinity Church at 11 a.m., at which the Rev. Roland Hart will preach.

Combined Methodist and Presbyterian services will be held in Papanui, Shirley and Richmond, and these two denominations will combine with Baptists at Linwood, the Salvation Army, Church of Christ and Assembly of God at Sydenham, the Baptists and Church of Christ at St. Albans, and the Salvation Army at New Brighton.

Baptist Churches will have a combined service in Papanui North Baptist Church at 7 p.m. on Good Friday. The Rev. L. N. Rawlings will preach. Members of the Salvation Army will have three services at the Christchurch Citadel on Good Friday. Colonel and Mrs Banwell Cook will conduct the services. At 7 p.m. on Saturday there will be an open air meeting in Cathedral square and a sunrise service prayer meeting in Victoria square on Easter Day. There will be a Solemn Pontifical Mass for Roman Catholics on Thursday at. 10 a.m., at which the Holy Oils will be blessed. Another Solemn Mass at 8 p.m. will commemorate the institution of the Eucharist. On Good Friday the masses of the Presanctified and the Stations of the Cross will be held. On Saturday the Easter vigil will be followed by the Pontifical ceremonies and Mass. The Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. E. M. Joyce) will officiate at all these ceremonies. HOLIDAY TRAIN BOOKINGS

Extra Services Tomorrow Easter bookings on trains leaving Christchurch are about the same as last year, according to booking officials at the Christchurch Railway Station. However, the exodus of travellers to other parts of the South Island will be large and to cope with bookings extra trains will be run. On Thursday, April 14, extra trains will leave the station for Picton, at 10.35 p.m.; Dunedin, 9.10 a.m., 10.5 p.m., 10.55 p.m.; Arthur’s Pass, 5.55 p.m.; Greymouth, 6.45 p.m.; Hokitika, 10.30 p.m. On Friday, there will be a generally curtailed service. The normal Christchurch to Picton rail-car will run. Going south, there will .be an additional express to Dunedin at 9.10 p.m., a rail-car will run to the West Coast at 6.40 p.m., and to Greymouth at 10.5 a.m. On Saturday, there will be a normal timetable, and on Sunday the 10.55 p.m. express to Dunedin will not run. On Monday, there will be addi tional expresses to Dunedin leaving Chrstchurch at 9.10 a.m., and 10.55 p.m. Normal rail-car services will run to the West Coast, with an express to Greymouth at 6.40 p.m. On Tuesday, there will be an additional express to Dunedin at 9.10 pjn.
