Noisy Tracks

Sir, —I dwell in what should be a pleasant Ashburton suburb. Unfortunately I might as well live adjacent to a factory, and a noisy, smelly, and unsightly one at that. It is one of the numerous transporting factories (sometimes called shqep trucks) which clutter the streets in our residential areas. This montrous thing shatters sleep in the early dawn, 4.15 a.m., Sundays included, in the height of the season. No doubt the driver is greatly cheered by his highly-paid state of wakefulness as he roars through gear*, revving, up his mighty engine with all the zest of the drivers of “bombs" in dral square. Alas, rudely flung into a compulsory' state'of wakefulness, I find myself exhausted and highly incensed by the tumult I believe that part of the council’s river reserve was ceded to a transport firm some years ago for the purpose of providing a central depot. If this is correct, I feel that steps should be taken to remove these unsightly backdrops to our wellkept suburban gardens, and more especially to abate a serious early-morning nuisance.—Yours, etc., RELUCTANT ROOSTER. April 7, 1960. [The Ashburton Town Clerk (Mr H. C. Childs) said that although the council did not as a rule answer anonymous . correspondence, he must point out that, while the trucks were parked on public streets not contrary to the law, there was little that the council could do to force their removal.]
