WEDDING OF PRINCESS

Dr. Gillian To Be Best Man

LONDON, April 9

Dr. Roger William Gilliatt, son of the former gynaecologist to the Queen, but himself only recently introduced to Princess Margaret, is to be best man at her wedding next month to Mr Antony Armstrong-Jones, it was announced today. The choice of the 37-year-old consultant, an old friend of the bridegroom, caused some surprise. His name had not been mentioned in the newspaper “guessing game" after the withdrawal for health reasons of Mr Jeremy Fry, the couple’s original choice. Dr. Gilliatt served in France and Germanv with the 60th Rifles during .World War II and won the Military for bravery. He is tall and dark.

The late Sir William Gilliatt was the former president of the Royal College of Surgeons and attended the Queen at the births of Prince Charles and Princess Anne. He died after a road accident in September, 1956. Dr. Gilliatt was educated at Rugby and Magdalen College, Oxford, and lives in fashionable Lowndes square in London with his wife, the former Miss Penelope Conner. They have no children.

Dr. Gilliatt’s wife is a daughter of Mr Cyril Conner, head of the overseas and foreign relations department of the British Broadcasting Corporation’s overseas service. She was a fashion iournalist when she married in 1954, but resigned in October last year.
