Tennis SEDGMAN SHOWS GREATNESS
Touring Troup In Lower Hutt (New Zealand Press Association) i WELLINGTON, April-10. F. Sedgman demonstrated to a capacity house at Lower Hutt on Saturday night what a great tennis player he is when he beat L. Hoad, 9-7, 6-2. In the other match by the professional touring troup, M. Anderson overcame poor first set play to beat A. Cooper, 2-6. 6-4, 6-3. This concluded two nights of tennis of a standard never before seen Jn the area. The troup was magnificent and showed great play to the enthusiastic spectators. One of the longest rallies of the night punctuated the opening game of the Hoad-Sedgman encounter and finished with a glorious backhand from Sedgman that left Hoad stranded. He exhibited this shot again in the second game when he sent two straight down the line and left Hoad a spectator. Hoad’s effortless backhand volley won him many points and for a player of such tremendous power he showed an extremely delicate touch. Anderson was a mere shadow of the player seen in Masterton and Palmerston North in the first set against Cooper. He netted many volleys and his timing was off for many strokes. Cooper, on the other hand, served powerfully, made few errors, and showed all the grim determination that made him the world's leading amateur in 1958. In the doubles match Hoad and Anderson beat Cooper and Sedgman. 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. It was a refreshingly light-hearted encounter, but Hoad showed great touch and volleying and there was some magnificent returns of service by Anderson. CUMBERLAND CLUB FINALS N.Z.
