CENTENARY OF CHURCH

Service Yesterday At Lyttelton The historic church of the Most Holy Trinity, Lyttelton, was beautifully decorated for evensong yesterday in celebration of the centenary of. the consecration and opening of the present building. A large number of past and present parishioners attended. The service was conducted by the vicar (the Rev. B. O. Richards). The Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren) preached from St Matthew 21, verses nine and 13. Praise was offered in the singing of Psalm 84 and the hymns "In Our Day of Thanksgiving,” “Ride On, Ride On in Majesty,” “The Church’s One Foundation” and “Now Thank We All Our God” and the Te Deum. Former parishioners and friends were entertained at a tea in the parish hall. A centennial cake decorated with a large model of the church, the work of Mr B Taylor, was cut by the eldest former parishioner, Mre G. Faber (formerly Miss Evans). Mr F. E. Sutton, a former office holder at the church, gave a talk on the parish as it was in the early part of the present century. Mrs R. I. Lamb, whose first husband, the Rev. E. Hanna, was a former vicar of Holy Trinity, presented the parish with a Communion set for use when visiting the sick. It had been presented to Mr Hanna when he became a curate in England in 1913.
