Gabriella Ends Days In Breaker’s Yard “The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, April 10. The former Union Steam Ship Company’s . Gabriella, which served for many years In the West Coast coal trade, is now being broken up at Piraeus. Built in 1920, this 1586-ton vessel was one of the best known coasters plying to Wellington. She had been purchased from Lamb and Company, after serving for a number of years on the Australian coast. The Gabriella was laid up in “Rotten Row” off Kaiwharawhara in 1950 and was purchased by Mrs Chandris, a Greek shipowner, along with the Wingatui, Poolta, Karetu and Kaimai. As the Dora Chandris she left New Zealand waters in 1951, was sold to Costa Rican owners in 1955, and renamed Capetan Costas. Towards the end of April last year, she was laid up in a Greek port and sold for scrapping in December.
