ADDINGTON MARKET Bacon Pigs At High Prices; Fat Ewes Dearer

Bacon pigs reached exceptional prices at Addington market yesterday. Selling to more than £lB they were said to have reached values as’ high as ever known at. Addington and possibly as high as ever recorded in New Zealand. A man who has been associated with the pig market at Addington for more than 30 years said yesterday that he had not seen higher prices paid. Fat ewes had one of their best sales of the season, best sorts being dearer by up to 5s and plainer sorts also improving on average by 3s. Lighter and older wethers on the other hand were cheaper—the older wethers depreciating by as much as 6s to Bs. With more than 1700 lambs forward the market held up remarkably well but toward the close there was an easing of 2s to 3s a head and more. Prices improved slightly in the fat cattle section. Best steers and heifers made a fractional advance and boner-type cows, in particular, improved by the full extent of the latest gain in the export schedule. In the dairy cattle section heifer prices declined sharply again by £3 to £5 a head.

FAT LAMBS The fat lamb entry at 1713 was much larger than last week when 1011 were yarded, and the sale went on until about midday. The arrival of about eight trucks from the West Coast was largely responsible for the increased offering. Overall quality was good, and in fact for evenness of quality in the view of some observers, it was one of the best selections seen at the yards for a very long time. Considering the size of the selection the sale could be regarded as a satisfactory one with a steady demand persisting over most of the offering with values little inferior to late rates. However, with the weight of lambs forward, it was not surprising that over the latter stages here was an easing of up to 2s to 3s a head and more with sales a little harder to make. The top price for lambs was 75s Id, which went to G. C. Abbott (Cheviot) for the tops of 10. Two cuts of West Coast lainbs reached 71s Id. In one case 15 made this money, and in another four out of a line of 103, which averaged 60s. M. J. C. Meyer (Christchurch) sold nine at 70s Id, J. Johnson (Rakaia) had a sale at up to 67s Id, and J. Clayton (Mawheraiti) received 65s Id for four. Shorn ilambs sold up to 62s ?.d for lambs'from Beddis and Brown (Fernside). Values were:— Extra prime heavy lambs, 63s Id to 70s Id, with odd sales to 75s Id. Prime heavy lambs, 52s Id to 59s Id. Prime medium lambs, 44s Id to 48s Id. Prime light lambs, 38s Id to 43s Id. Meyer (Christchurch), 9 at 70s FAT SHEEP The feature of the fat sheep market was the sale of ewes, which was the best of the season. Best ewes were dearer by 3s to 5s a head and plainer sorts sold particularly well with an appreciation of about 3s. At these rates there was a complete clearance of a sizeable yarding of ewes, Including a number of good quality, and values remained steady until the end. The quality of the wether entry was also fairly good with a fair proportion of good young wethers yarded. Following the bigger lamb sale the market, could be quoted for the most part slightly easier. Where quality was high prices remained fairly close to late rates, but lighter classes were cheaper by 3s to 4s and for older sheep, of which there was a fair offering, values were definitely easier by 6s to 8s a head.

Wether values varied quite appreciably during the course of the sale. At the, opening buyers were a little cautious and values were lower than last week. Later the market picked up. except for older wethers, but over the concluding stages the weight of numbers began to tell and values declined again. The yarding totalled 3995 compared with 2743 last week. F. Tavener (Geraldine) headed the wether market with a sale of 12 at 74s Id. Another 10 from his line also made 70s Id. M. W. McDonald (Waiau) realised 72s Id for eight and A. T. and L. A. Watson (Ataahua) reached up to 71s Id. Sales at 69s Id were made by M. Quigley (Geraldine) and by G. J. Francis (Halswell), who also sold shorn wethers at up to 66s Id. The top ewe sale was made by A. T. and L. A. Watson with two well-woolled sheep fetching 44s Id. Two similar sheep from I. C. Gray (Kaituna) made 42s Id. Other good sales included one on account of a Rangiora qlient at up to 31s Id, which was also paid for six from T. J. Palmer (Little River).

FAT CATTLE There was a reasonably good market for fat cattle. The yarding of 466 head compared with 404 last week was again of only ordinary quality with only a few heavy-weight cattle included. For good quality steers and heifers values tended to improve slightly, but secondary sorts were unchanged. Cows sold readily throughout with boner cows in particular, reflecting fully the latest appreciation in schedule rates. Top price for steers was £56 17s 6d for one from McGrath Bros. (Matai Creek). L. Chaney (Kaiapoi) received £54 7s 6d for another one and for a single L. Blain (Winchmore) was paid £52 17s 6d. For a line of 34 steers the estate of Mrs W. Macfarlane (Lakes Station) averaged £46 4s, with the top price for the line £5l 7s 6d. . E. S. Kane (Aranui) sold a heifer at £43 12s 6d, and a North Otago client received up to £43 2s 6d. L. Blain had a heifer which made £4l 17s 6d, and Mrs K. M. Popplewell (Waiau) obtained £4O 2s 6d for another. For three, the Tourist Department .(Franz Josef) received £39 2s 6d each. Thirty-five Lakes Station heifers averaged £36 13s making up to £37 17s 6d. A. Jacobs (Ladbrooks) headed the cow sales with one at £46 2s 6d, J. Sullivan (Cashmere) also sold one at £4O 12s 6d, and C. R. Wakelin (Winchmore), R. E. Gillman and Son (Waikuku) and E. S. BULLS The yarding of 26 bulls compared with only nine last week comprised mainly light and inferior sorts which sold from only a few pounds up to about £26 17s (id. The few medium-weights brought from £32 17s fid to £49 17s 6d. The latter price was paid for an Aberdeen Angus and also an Ayrshire. Apart from these cattle a big Shorthorn sold for £74 17s 6d and a Jersey for £5O 17s 6d. . The store cattle sale will be held today, but there was a miscellaneous offering of boner cattle yesterday which sold well fully reflecting the increase in the boner schedule. DAIRY CATTLE Values for heifers dropped sharply again in the dairy cattle section where the yarding totalled about 51 head. The offering included a line of early spring calving cows, which sold reasonably well at £24 to £3O 10s averaging £2B 12s, and the balance of the selection comprised mainly Friesian cows and heifers of mixed quality. From the outset values for heifers eased again sharply on the lower rates of last week and over-all the decline was from £3 to £5 a head with secondary sorts showing a more marked decline than the better class. There were a few passings. The selection of cows was not large and quality was generally quite good. Here prices did not show the sharp movement of the heifer section and were from par to a shade easier.

Two exceptionally good Friesian cows sold at £66 and £7B and one springer made £6B.
